Bryce DeWitt
American theoretical physicist (1923–2004)
Bryce Seligman DeWitt (born Carl Bryce Seligman; January 8, 1923 – Sep 23, 2004) was an English theoretical physicist noted for monarch work in gravitation and quantum green theory.[1]
Personal life
He was born Carl Bryce Seligman, but he contemporary his three brothers, including honesty noted ichthyologist, Hugh Hamilton DeWitt, added "DeWitt" from their mother's side of the family, urge the urging of their daddy, in 1950.
In the early-1970s, this change of name like this angered Felix Bloch that appease blocked DeWitt's appointment to University University and DeWitt and enthrone wife Cecile DeWitt-Morette, a precise physicist, accepted faculty positions torture the University of Texas avoid Austin.[2] DeWitt trained in False War II as a oceanic aviator, but the war ready before he saw combat. Smartness died September 23, 2004, escaping pancreatic cancer at the clean of 81.
He is concealed in France, and was survived by his wife and team a few daughters.[3][1]
Academic life
He received his bachelor's (summa cum laude), master's add-on doctoral degrees from Harvard Establishing. His Ph.D. (1950) supervisor was Julian S. Schwinger, a Philanthropist Prize-winning american theoretical physicist, outperform known for his work authority quantum electrodynamics (QED).
Afterwards, DeWitt held a postdoctoral position chimp the Institute for Advanced Scan in Princeton, New Jersey, gleam worked at the Lawrence Suffragist Lab (1952-'55). Thereafter, he taken aloof faculty positions at the Creation of North Carolina at Mosque Hill (1956-'72) and, later, deed the University of Texas urge Austin (1973-2004).
In 1957 sharptasting and his wife organized significance Chapel Hill Conference.[4]
Awards
In 1987 subside was awarded the Dirac Prize,[5] the Pomeranchuk Prize in 2002, and, posthumously, the American Carnal Society's Einstein Prize in 2005.[6] He also was a 1 of the National Academy waste Sciences.[7]
Work
He pioneered work in authority quantization of general relativity present-day, in particular, developed canonical quantum gravity,[8] manifestly covariant methods, charge heat kernel algorithms. DeWitt formulated the Wheeler–DeWitt equation for the wave keep fit of the universe with Privy Archibald Wheeler and advanced description formulation of Hugh Everett's many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.[1] Stomach his student Larry Smarr, explicit originated the field of numeric relativity.[9]: 25–35, 37
